Marcella (Sally) Gaffney [06/15/1922 - 06/05/2013]

http://rembsfh.com/pages/show_content.php?siteid=177&action=1&value=12&obituaries_action=2&obituaryid=145032

Marcella (Sally) Gaffney died peacefully on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at Ministry St. Joseph Hospital surrounded by her family.

She was born on June 15, 1922, in Medford, WI, the second child to Martin and Rose (Hellmann) Diers. During her childhood her family moved to the rural Marshfield area where she grew up. She was a devote Catholic and member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bakerville where her uncle once served as pastor. Sally was an active member of the Christian Mothers Organization and for many years helped with weddings, funeral luncheons and parish fundraisers. During her later years she continued to support these endeavors and enjoyed a good “church dinner.”

Sally grew up believing in hard work and always making the most of the opportunities given her. She was a great cook and as a young woman owned and operated The North Side Restaurant in Marshfield where she met her husband Robert (Bob) Gaffney who was just home from WWII. They married at Corpus Christi and bought a home in the Town of Cameron. There they raised their children. Until recently hospitalized, she remained in the family home until the time of her death. She will forever be remembered for her independent spirit and deep faith.

The love of her life was being a parent. Sally always enjoyed being part of the activities involving her children. She was an active parent in the PTA, 4-H and volunteered at the school forest. She was a pioneer in her generation pursuing a full career outside the home. In the late 50”s she began selling Studio Girl Cosmetics and later went on to open Studio Girl Studio located on 3rd Street. She then discovered Beeline Fashions, a party plan women’s clothing line and became a stylist demonstrator and later district manager. She thrived on wearing the latest in clothing apparels and the social interaction her career brought her. She was employed with Beeline Fashions for over twenty years.

Deep sadness hit her life with the sudden motorcycle death of her third child Gerald. Working was good therapy. Years later, her heart was again broken with the death of her youngest daughter Linda following a seven year battle with bone cancer. Sally was constantly at her daughter’s side as a caregiver, loving parent and grandparent.

Until late in their golden years, to getaway from the business world that was so much a part of both of their lives, Sally and Bob enjoyed their summers up north on Pier Lake. It’s there that Sally enjoyed the peacefulness of the lake and a great book.

Her children and grandchildren will always remember her for making the “best apple pie.” It was her trademark at every family gathering. She enjoyed cooking and loved entertaining. She looked forward to holding the “babies” and took joy in watching her grandchildren parent.

Sally and her sisters were icons at local Marshfield restaurants and would later gather for a good game of cards. At home, Sally could be found with book in hand or working on a needlework project. She loved watching the Packers and caring for her bird Pat. Sally lived a full life centered in her love of God religiously praying her daily rosary. Today she rests hearing the words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

Sally was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, two children and a granddaughter.

She is survived by daughter Donna Siemers (Dale) Stillwater, MN; sons Don Gaffney (Eileen) Marshfield; Bob Gaffney (Wendy) Wausau, WI, grandchildren Gretchen Romain (Ron) Hastings, MN; Heidi Howe (Matthew) Woodbury, MN; Abby Grommesch (Steve) Burnsville, MN; Rebecca Barott (Ryan) Minneapolis, MN; Dawn Gillin (Ed) West Grove, PA; Rochelle Niggemann (Aaron) Marshfield; Brandon Kay, Dallas, TX; Shannon Kay (Deanna) Mosinee; Bridgett Gawlik (Josh) Woodbury, MN; Justin Gaffney (Emily) Wausau, WI., eighteen great-grandchildren, sisters Isabelle Kroening, Helen Hofmann, Marie Bohman, Nita Diers and Rosina (Clyde) Elhert along with many nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:30am Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Bakerville with Fr. Sebastian Venni officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery followed by a meal at the church hall.

Visitations will be on Saturday at the church from 10am until time of services with a Parish Council of Catholic Women rosary at 9:45am Saturday at the church.

Rembs Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Lauri R. "Ray" Heikenen [02/19/1924 - 05/10/2013]

http://rembsfh.com/pages/show_content.php?siteid=177&action=1&value=12&obituaries_action=2&obituaryid=143451

Lauri Raymond “Ray” Heikenen, 89, of Junction City passed away on May 10, 2013 at Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, WI.

He was born in Brownsmead, Oregon on February 19, 1924 to Charles and Anna (Sippa) Heikenen. His parents emigrated separately from Finland in their teens and met and married in northern Minnesota. After the Moose Lake Fire they moved to Oregon, returning to Cloquet, Minnesota when Lauri was still young.

After beginning high school, Lauri went to work in a defense industry on the west coast during World War II, then enlisted in the Army Air Force on October 4, 1943. In the Army he received his high school equivalency, attended radio and gunnery school and became an aerial gunner in a B-17 Flying Fortress. The war ended before He was deployed overseas and he left the service on November 6, 1945 with the rank of sergeant.

Lauri met Fay Lois Engel (who was engaged at the time) at Smithy’s Supper Club in Solon Springs Wisconsin, a favorite hangout for young people from the Duluth, Minnesota area. There is some dispute regarding who first asked who to dance and they were married in Duluth on April 3, 1948.

After working at a number of things Lauri became the night foreman at a Farmhand plant in the twin cities. After a cutback in production He was offered a job of “going on the road” to sell Farmhand farm implements to farm equipment dealers throughout the State of Wisconsin. He literally spent the rest of his life on the road selling farm equipment. After several years with Farmhand, Lauri decided he had the skill to take a chance at being an independent rep and started off on his own. He repped a number of different lines from “Badge-Air” air compressors to Dickey John seed testers to Heiton forage boxes. In 1967, he and a partner started H&S Manufacturing Company in Marshfield, Wisconsin in a 50x100 block building. H&S built and sold a single product, a self unloading forage box. In 1986 Lauri bought out his partner and H&S purchased his partner’s business, Steinberg Manufacturing Company. H&S was named Marshfield Chamber of Commerce firm of the year in 1987. Today H&S has a widespread line of hay and forage equipment, employs over 220 people and sells its equipment through a network of over 300 dealers and distributors. In addition to North America, H&S products are commonly loaded in freight containers for shipment to Europe, Japan and South America. H&S also supplies many of its products to John Deere, Case New Holland and Agco which then sell it to their dealers with their label on it.

Lauri was still on the road calling on dealers and coming to the office within weeks of his passing.

Lauri was very supporting and generous with his family. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. Lauri enjoyed fishing, hunting, dogs, working on puzzles, gardening (he created several beautiful yards), and supporting several Wisconsin based Indian Nations. His courage and optimism carried his family and company through every challenge, to the end.

Lauri was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Lauri is survived by his wife Fay; son Gary (Jan) Heikenen, daughter Jill Heikenen, son Chris (Evelyn) Heikenen, son Brian (Joani Freitas) Heikenen and granddaughter Eilee Heikenen-Weiss.

A visitation will be held at Rembs Funeral Home, 300 South Oak Avenue, Marshfield, WI 54449 on Wednesday May 15 from 2PM to 8PM.

In lieu of any monetary tribute the family asks that you contribute to your favorite charity or commit a random act of kindness for a stranger.

She especially enjoyed the medical field, working as a nurse’s aide and then later as a home health care provider eventually opening her home to caring for the elderly. We will miss her sweet disposition, her loving acceptance, her hugs and kisses and the best apple pies ever.
